Race Exhibit & Banners

Exhibition Design. Graphic Design. Design Development.
Project Planning. Large Format Production. Exhibits Installation

RACE: Are We So Different? is a public education effort designed to give people more information about the science, history, and lived experience surrounding race and its misconceptions in a bilingual setting.

The RACE: Are We So Different? Exhibition and traveling exhibit are composed of a permanent exhibit located at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences along with several sets of pop-up banners which are designed to reach a wider audience than the larger stationary, permanent exhibit would.

My Role:

My Role within our Exhibits team was to lead the design direction. Starting from the original set of banners that travelled throughout North Carolina, Through our permanent Race Exhibit that has had two versions. From Design, to production and installation, I provided a clear plan and framework to complete this project from beginning to end.

  • Exhibit Design – Transforming an existing hallway, into an exhibit space.

  • Graphic Design – Graphic layout and general design from banner form to the final installation on the 4th floor of NCMNS.

Transformation:

Exhibit-space Design

Using color and modifying the shape of the hallway helps create the feeling of walking in a different space than the rest of the floor that this exhibit is on.

English and Spanish

This bilingual exhbit features large vertical text in English and Spanish that can be seen as you walk through the hallway on both sides of the columns.

Main Messages

Race and human biological variation are separate concepts. The idea of race is about culture, not biology.

We need to understand when and why the idea of race was invented to make progress towards undoing it.

Race and racism are embedded in our everyday lives.

Process

RACE: Are We So Different? originally developed in 2007 by the American Anthropological Association (AAA),
is the first exhibit of its kind to bring together information from 27 different academic disciplines to study race and how
it impacts people’s lives. This project includes work from geneticists, to social scientists, to historians, to medical and law experts.
The exhibit focuses on providing a variety of learning experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds.
