RACE: Are We So Different? is a public education effort designed to give people more information about the science, history, and lived experience surrounding race and its misconceptions in a bilingual setting.

The RACE: Are We So Different? Exhibition and traveling exhibit are composed of a permanent exhibit located at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences along with several sets of pop-up banners which are designed to reach a wider audience than the larger stationary, permanent exhibit would.

The Main Messages of this exhibit are

Race and human biological variation are separate concepts. The idea of race is about culture, not biology.

We need to understand when and why the idea of race was invented to make progress towards undoing it.

Race and racism are embedded in our everyday lives.

RACE: Are We So Different? originally developed in 2007 by the American Anthropological Association (AAA),
is the first exhibit of its kind to bring together information from 27 different academic disciplines to study race and how
it impacts people’s lives. This project includes work from geneticists, to social scientists, to historians, to medical and law experts.
The exhibit focuses on providing a variety of learning experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Permanent Race Exhibit

After the major success of RACE: Are We So Different? in 2017, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources decided to bring the exhibit back permanently. This version will be updated and work to serve the Southeast, as well as highlight the race-related stories that are unique to this part of the country.
