Challenging the Deep

Exhibition Design. Exhibits Installation. Wayfinding

Challenging the Deep is an international traveling exhibit originating in Australia, that our exhibits team and museum decided to bring into our space at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. Working to design, create, produce, and install systems of labels, signage, wayfinding, and graphics. This allowed me to work with many different professionals from a variety of disciplines to help bring this exhibition to life.

I’m an explorer at heart, a filmmaker by trade.
— James Cameron

Teaser Wall

The exhibition traces explorer and filmmaker James Cameron’s passion for deep-ocean science, technology and exploration, including his record-breaking dive to the bottom of the ocean in the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER – the submersible he co-designed and co-engineered. Along with props that were used in the movie ‘Titanic’, James Cameron shows how he has explored the depths since an early age.

This immersive exhibition takes you into a deep-ocean environment using cinema-scale projections, artifacts and specimens from his expeditions. Learning how technologies pioneered by Cameron for underwater recording, lighting, communication and diving are employed in both his filmmaking and exploration. You also see original film props and costumes from “The Abyss” and “Titanic,” including the iconic Heart of the Ocean diamond.
